JCC Utilizes Rich Media Technology to Premier a Health Care First
|The Juravinski Cancer Centre (JCC) has taken an innovative and interactive initiative in regards to patient education by launching a virtual tour video of the cancer centre on its website.
A first of its kind in health care, the new online resource was developed to help alleviate some of the anxieties faced by patients and their families visiting the JCC for the first time.
“Providing a valuable online patient education resource that can be accessible to everyone from across the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network is important to us as the regional cancer centre,” said Dr. Bill Evans, President of the Juravinski Cancer Centre and Regional Vice President of Cancer Care Ontario. “Even before coming in for their first appointment, anyone with connection to the Internet will be able to visit the JCC website, view the virtual tour and learn about the kind of high quality, expert care provided by staff and physicians at the JCC.”
And unlike many other virtual tours where the objective is to physically orient viewers to a space or room through 360 degree pans, the JCC virtual tour presents viewers with a different experience.
Upon launching the virtual tour video, visitors are greeted by a virtual tour host who explains what the first visit to the cancer centre may entail as well as treatments and services offered at the JCC, including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, clinical trials and supportive care. These options are available as separate chapters, which users can select and preview at their leisure. Additional details including visitor maps and a patient and family handbook are presented as screen pop-ups which also can be accessed from the virtual tour player at any time.
In creating this innovative and interactive virtual tour, the JCC worked with BlueRush, a digital marketing firm with expertise in creative web production. Rather than using standalone text or images, the application of on-demand rich media technology, combined with digital animation and graphics allows a more effective way of communicating complex topics such as cancer treatments and services.
The end result is a virtual tour that provides viewers with a richer, more personal and compelling “TV-like” interactive experience.
“From the moment I toured the Juravinski Cancer Centre for myself, it was clear that the quality of care at the cancer centre is second to none. We wanted to capture and convey this sentiment in the rich media virtual tour so we applied our best developers and technology in showcasing the JCC experience,” said Larry Lubin, President & CEO of BlueRush Digital Media. “We are proud of this work and feel confident that the JCC online tour sets a new standard in how personal a virtual tour can be in health care.”
This leading edge approach to patient education was made possible because of the generosity of donors such as Ortho Biotech, who supported the JCC in developing the virtual tour.
When faced with a diagnosis of cancer, it’s natural for patients and their families to feel anxious, not knowing what to expect when they arrive at the cancer centre for the first time, unsure of their care journey ahead.
The images featured in the virtual tour were all taken at the cancer centre and reflect the care, thought and compassion which is at the heart of patient care at the JCC. In viewing the virtual tour, patients and their families can rest assured that they will be in good hands when they arrive at the cancer centre.
