Juravinski Cancer Centre Disease Site Teams
Cancer is not a single disease but many diseases. In order to provide optimal care for our patients, staff at the Juravinski Cancer Centre are organized in Disease Site Teams. These Teams include:
Head and Neck Cancer
Cancers of the Central Nervous System
Hematological Cancers (Leukemia, Lymphoma)
Melanoma and Skin Cancer
Each Team is made up of professional staff from a number of disciplines with expertise in diagnosing and treating specific cancers. Members of these multidisciplinary teams include surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, nurses, radiation therapists, pharmacists, social workers, nutritionists, and psychiatrists. Care provided by the members of the Disease Site Team at the Cancer Centre is coordinated with family physicians and other community services in order to ensure patients are supported along their cancer journey.
Depending on the type of cancer and the stage of cancer, an individual patient may receive one or more treatment modalities such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. In addition to the effects of cancer itself, many cancer treatments have side effects that require careful management. By working together in multidisciplinary teams, staff at the Cancer Centre can ensure patients receive optimal, integrated care and that patients can have access to an extensive range of expertise to help them make choices about their care that are well informed and meets their personal needs and preferences.
The Cancer Centre is an academic health care facility affiliated with McMaster University and therefore has a mandate to train the next generation of health professional trainees and to engage in research. Trainees participate in the Disease Site Teams and play an active role in the care of patients. Clinical Trials are an important component of care offered at the Cancer Centre, providing opportunities for patients to access the latest promising treatments and to participate in advancing our knowledge of how to best diagnose, treat, and cure cancer. Each Disease Site Team will have a range of clinical trials available for patients to consider as part of their care planning. To view the list of currently open clinical trials please click here.
