Therapeutic Arts Program

The Juravinski Cancer Centre/Henderson Oncology Ward E3 Therapeutic Arts Program (TAP) was launched in 2005.  Through humour, visual artistry, music therapy and therapeutic writing, TAP's goals are to help reduce pain and anxiety and to improve our patients' sense of wellbeing.

The humour component features Therapeutic Clowns and a Yuk Yuk Truck.  Our Clowns bring therapeutic play to the health care setting and provide diversion and moments of levity for patients, while our Yuk Yuk Truck delivers, at no cost, DVD players and comedy movies to our inpatients.

The visual artistry aspect of the program is underway through our "Paradox of the Vocation" project which links JCC staff with community artists.  This past summer, the project culminated in an art exhibit which was held at the JCC and the Print Studio.

Music Therapy has recently been added to our program.  Music therapy is the skillful use of music to enhance quality of life. For one afternoon a week, a music therapist visits with our patients on E3.

The Therapeutic Arts Program was initially funded by a grant totaling $75,000 from the Juravinski Cancer Foundation.
